In the moments leading up to 2013 CMT Music Awards , Jason Aldean needed psychological counseling and sought the assistance of therapist Kristen Bell while Vince Vaughn wanted to throw up. At least that’s part of the concept behind an opening segment of the awards show that aired live Wednesday (June 5) at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CMT and CMT.com.
Aldean and Bell are co-hosting the show, and Vaughn was part of a video skit that also features Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Reba McEntire. The clip also featured appearances by Dr. Drew, Kelsey Grammer (reprising his role as Dr. Frasier Crane in Frasier) and Lorraine Bracco (as Dr. Jennifer Melfi of The Sopranos).
McEntire, Shelton and Bryan, who have all hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards, offered comical advice as Aldean deals with his mental anguish over hosting a major awards show.
“I guess it’s because I’m hosting the CMT Awards,” Aldean explains. “I don’t know. It’s kind of a scary proposition for a Georgia boy.”
“Scary proposition?” Vaughn retorts, offering his own version of tough love. “Come on. Don’t be a punk. Pull yourself together here, Aldean. I love you like a brother, but you sicken me. Your attitude makes me want to puke. Makes me want to puke all over your shoes and all over your pants.”
Vaughn, who co-stars with Owen Wilson in the new film The Internship, ultimately provides the emotional support Aldean needs to host the awards show.
“Jason, listen, I want you to take this opportunity and ride it like the bucking bull that it is,” he says. “It’s your chance to learn, to grow, to show the world what you can do. In a way, you could treat this like it’s kind of an internship. So you go there on that stage tonight with that little red hot shrink next to you — and you ride like the wind to be free again.”
