Hunter Hayes Chooses Striking Matches to Light Up His New York Concert

Nashville Duo Will Open June 18 Concert to Be Live Streamed on MTV.com and CMT.com

Hunter Hayes has chosen Nashville-based duo Striking Matches to open the show during his MTV Artist to Watch Live show on Tuesday (June 18) in New York City.

Striking Matches, featuring Justin Davis and Sarah Zimmermann, are also among the finalists in the O Music Awards’ “Make a Band Famous” competition. Online voting closes on June 19 to determine the act that will get a once-in-a-lifetime shot to perform during the MTV Video Music Awards weekend in August and be featured on MTV, VH1 or CMT.

Hayes’ performance at Webster Hall will be live streamed on MTV.com and CMT.com. The event is something of a reunion for the young musician and Striking Matches.

“We go back a little ways,” Davis told MTV.com. “Before he released his record, Hunter used to come out to our shows, and we’ve developed a friendship. We respect him. We’ve gotten to know his family, but he’s been away a while, and he’s had his success, so it’s really incredible to get to hang out and make some music together.”

“He’s a killer player, too,” Zimmermann added. “So it will be great to share the stage with him.”

The June 18 show coincides with the deluxe Encore edition of Hayes’ self-titled debut album. As the headliner of this year’s CMT on Tour , his series of Let’s Be Crazy tour dates begin Oct. 10 in Knoxville, Tenn.
