Randy Travis in Critical Condition at Texas Hospital

Randy Travis was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon (July 8) at a Texas hospital after being diagnosed with complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy, a disease of heart muscle in which the heart is abnormally enlarged, thickened and/or stiffened. The illness weakens the heart's ability to pump blood. He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday. Travis' Nashville-based publicist confirmed the singer's condition in a press release but did not provide other specific information.

Travis' No. 1 hits include "On the Other Hand," "Forever and Ever, Amen" "Diggin' Up Bones," "Deeper Than the Holler" and "Three Wooden Crosses." He was scheduled to perform Wednesday in Deadwood, S.D., before traveling to weekend dates in Canada.

Travis signed to Warner Bros Records in 1985. "On the Other Hand," his first single for the new label, topped out at No. 67 in 1985. But noticing the success of his second single, "1982," which went Top 10, Warner Bros decided to rerelease "On the Other Hand" in 1986. It became the first of Travis' 16 No. 1 singles.

Between 1987 and 1989, Travis had an unbroken string of seven No. 1 singles, among them "Forever and Ever, Amen," "I Won't Need You Anymore," "I Told You So" (another of his own compositions) and "Is It Still Over."

He won Grammys for best male country vocal performances in 1987 and 1988 and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1986.

Over the course of his career, his albums earned five gold, three platinum and eight multiple platinum certifications. His most popular collection, Always & Forever, released in 1987, has sold more than 5 million copies.

After a series of arrests and legal problems near his Texas home in 2012, Travis teamed with The Avett Brothers for an episode of CMT Crossroads. Taped Oct. 24 in Franklin, Tenn., the concert special premiered Nov. 23.
