OFFSTAGE: Darius Rucker’s “Radio” Feels Right

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

When you find a feel-real-good song on country radio, chances are Darius Rucker is singing it. And chances are Luke Laird and Ashley Gorley helped write it. So how fitting that those three put their heads together on a song called “Radio”? It’s Rucker’s new single, and even though it has to be hard to duplicate the success of “Wagon Wheel,” this one has all the makings of a hit. Because everyone can relate to that time in your life when the car radio was the only source of music you had. Like when you couldn’t afford to buy music or go see live music. The radio becomes your everything. “I want somebody to go, ’I know exactly what he’s talking about,'” Rucker told CMT Radio. “When I was in high school, that’s what we did. We got in the car, we listened to the radio and you went out and played with your friends. Every time you heard a song you loved, you turned it up as loud as you can.” Just like the car in the song, my first one was my mom’s Chevy Citation, and it was falling apart, but all I cared about was the radio.
