The Black Lillies set up to play on a street corner in historic downtown Knoxville, Tenn., not far from the bars where they got their start. Thanks to some tweets and local news attention, they attracted a big audience of fans, friends and family. When the firemen pulled up, the Concrete Country crew thought maybe they’d done something wrong, but they were just hanging out and listening to the music.
The band played four numbers from their brand new album, Runaway Freeway Blues, which had just hit the Billboard country chart that week. And the shoot came on the heels of their official CD release party at the Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville. They chatted easily with the crowd and invited folks to come in closer.
That good-natured vibe extends beyond the stage, too. In the interview after the shoot, lead singer Cruz Contreras said, “I used to think that happiness was free. Something you were just born with. I was born naturally happy. Things can rough you up a bit. This was like my recipe for bringing happiness to my life — making music with my friends, making other people happy.”
CMT and Mountain Dew’s Concrete Country with the Black Lillies premieres on CMT on Tuesday (July 30) at 11:50 p.m. ET/PT.See behind-the-scenes photos.
