OFFSTAGE: Who Else Is Redneck Crazy About Tyler Farr?

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I took some heat for proclaiming my love for newcomer Tyler Farr’s “Redneck Crazy” when it was released a few months ago. If you haven’t heard it, it’s about a guy who finds out his girlfriend is cheating on him, so he goes to her house and gets his pissed off on, instead of wallowing in woe-is-me self-pity. So, this was a typical conversation between me and someone who didn’t interpret things my way:

Me: Man, I love this song.

Friend: Are you (expletive) serious? This guy sounds completely abusive. And he’s basically stalking his ex-girlfriend, for God’s sake.

Me: But that’s only because he loved her so much. And he’s not willing to let her go that easily. He won’t back down. It’s actually pretty romantic.

Friend: So if some guy gets drunk, drives to your house at 3 a.m. and threatens your new boyfriend, you’d call that romantic?

Me: Hell, yes. Sexy, too.

I can see how some people might not love this song, but I think I was on the right track because it was just certified gold and is already No. 11 on Billboard’s country airplay chart. So the idea of being loved so much it drives a guy a little crazy isn’t just hot to me. It’s hot to country fans everywhere. Farr’s debut album will be available on Sept. 30.
