Casey Donahew Stands Firmly in Texas Tradition

With an unusual cold snap in Fort Worth, Texas, we opted to film Casey Donahew under the eaves of the Cowtown Coliseum, an iconic building in the Stockyards. That kept the wind out, plus the fans were able to stay warm. An approachable guy, Donahew stuck around afterwards to hand out autographed copies of his brand new CD, StandOff.

I met Donahew a while back in Nashville, so we were able to pick up the thread during our interview, which took place inside the coliseum. When we talked about the rewards of having his own record label, he said he appreciates having the control to record and release any kind of songs he chooses. Of course, this native Texan is more than just a country singer.

“It’s definitely based in country, but we like to let the dogs out once in a while and really rock it up there,” he says. “It’s just a crazy blend. I don’t try to mold the musicians that play for me into one group. I’ll let them be who they are. I have a lot of guys from a lot of different backgrounds, and for some reason we put it together and it works.”

CMT and Mountain Dew’s Concrete Country with Casey Donahew premieres on CMT on Tuesday (Aug. 20) at 11:50 p.m. ET/PT.
