OFFSTAGE: Miley Cyrus on VMAs Gets Tongues Wagging

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

What’s the talk now, on the Monday (Aug. 26) after the MTV VMAs? That would be Miley Cyrus. Or, the tongue she couldn’t manage to keep in her mouth. Or her Build-a-Bear dance crew. Or her latex flesh-colored bikini. Or that phallic foam finger she treated like her BFF.

It’s pretty hard to choose one element of her “We Can’t Stop” performance — and then the “Blurred Lines” duet she did with Robin Thicke — that was the most offensive. And it’s hard to forgive Cyrus’ kind of musical debauchery.

Ever since Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs, I think people have been waiting for something controversial to happen again. But this year, I knew West would keep to himself. That’s because he finally has real, actual remorse. He was a guest on the new talk show Kris, hosted by his new baby girl’s grandmother Kris Jenner, and Jenner and West touched on the infamous “Imma Let You Finish” incident.

“Even at my lowest points, the last thing I would want to happen to my daughter is some crazy drunk black guy in a leather shirt to come up and cut her off at an award show,” he said. “I was just a crazy rock star.” In a bizarre way, it was the nicest apology he’s made in the four years since. So it was a relief to watch Swift take home her best female video trophy on Sunday (Aug. 25) night’s show without worrying about WWKD (What Will Kanye Do?).

At this point, after hearing West and his new found paternal instinct, I think his silence this year makes me want to forgive him. I know he’s already apologized to Swift, but maybe now, his fatherly instinct will get him to say he’s sorry to Swift’s parents too.
