OFFSTAGE: Chris Young’s Friend Uses Laughter as the Best Medicine

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

There was nothing funny about Chris Young’s recent hospital stay after he was rushed to Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver on Aug. 13 for a dangerous bacterial infection. It all started with a cut on his leg, but it got much, much worse. He started going into septic shock, had to have emergency surgery and then spent time in the ICU. But once he was stable and able to tell his friends that he was going to recover, one friend sounded a little bummed.

“I had one of my buddies text me and he goes, ’Dude, are you OK?’ Young said in a recent radio interview. “I was like, ’Yeah, they should be moving me out of the ICU tomorrow. And he went, ’Damn! I had a whole bunch of your stuff that I was gonna unload if you weren’t doing so hot.’ I was like, ’Thank you. I really appreciate that. I’m glad you care.”

It’s a relief to know that Young — and his friends — can joke around now that the scary part is behind him. And even though his doctors warned Young that his mobility would be limited, he’s already back out on the road with Brad Paisley.
