Carrie Underwood has officially kicked off her inaugural run as the new face of NBC’s Sunday Night Football theme, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.” Her version of the theme premiered Sunday (Sept. 8).
“I was excited to be part of the family,” she says. “This has become a thing, it’s become a part of Sunday Night Football. This whole song leading into it, it’s like, ’OK, it’s time — it’s time for football!”
Underwood, who put her own spin on the tune, inherited the position from fellow country superstar Faith Hill after a six-year run. Underwood says the transition has been natural for her.
“I’m a football girl,” she says. “I love football. I wanted to perform in something I would watch a game in, you know what I mean? So that was important to me to be myself and be relatable and to be a girl who loves the game.”
The “See You Again” singer most likely watched Sunday’s game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys while recovering from a fumble of her own last week during a Texas concert.
As previously reported, Underwood injured her foot during a Thursday night (Sept. 5) concert in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was performing “Undo It” when she experienced some footwear problems as her 5-inch stiletto heel caught the bottom of the long shirt she was wearing.
Fortunately, she completed the song — and the concert — and was joking about it a short time later via Twitter and Facebook.
Underwood will wrap her summer tour dates on Friday (Sept. 13) at the Washington State Far in Puyallup, Wash.
