I knew this would happen. Luke Bryan is so well-loved in the country music community, I had a gut feeling his friends would come to his defense after one of his songs was bad-mouthed recently. I just didn’t know Jason Aldean would be the first one to go public to criticize the critics.
“I hear some other artists are bashing my boy @LukeBryan’s new song, sayin’ it’s the worst song they have ever heard . … To those people runnin’ their mouths, trust me when I tell u that nobody gives a (expletive) what u think. It’s a big ol’ hit so apparently the fans love it which is what matters. Keep doing ur thing LB!!!”
Since we now live in a world that revolves around social media, Aldean’s comment has already received close to 30,000 likes and about 1,700 comments. Even though Aldean didn’t name anyone who was “runnin’ his mouth,” Zac Brown did have some harsh things to say about “That’s My Kind of Night” during a recent interview with a Canadian radio station. In Brown’s defense, he had nothing but good things to say about Bryan personally.
But it’s certainly not the first time one country artist has criticized another about the merit of the music. I remember when Travis Tritt said Billy Ray Cyrus’ big ol’ hit from 1992 — “Achy Breaky Heart” — was frivolous and that he didn’t want to see country music turned into an “ass-wiggling contest.”
Cyrus later defended himself, subtly, at the 1993 American Music Awards when he won favorite country single, and said, “To those people who don’t like ’Achy Breaky Heart,’ here’s a quarter, call someone who cares.”
Which is, of course, is a reference to Tritt’s hit from 1991.
