Darius Rucker Hopes Bob Dylan Will Join Him at CMA Awards

"Wagon Wheel" Brings Nomination to Dylan and Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor

Darius Rucker has racked up many great accomplishments within the last year, including induction as a Grand Ole Opry member, a headlining tour, a No. 1 country album with True Believers and another chart-topping single with the double-platinum “Wagon Wheel,” which is up for two CMA Awards this year.

So what’s Rucker hoping to do next? Perform “Wagon Wheel” with Bob Dylan at the upcoming awards show, of course.

Rucker gets the nod for the tune’s single of the year nomination which is given to the artist and producer. But the song of the year honor is bestowed on the songwriters. In the case of “Wagon Wheel,” that would be Dylan and Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor.

The CMA nomination is a first for both Secor and Dylan, so when CMT Radio bumped into Rucker last week in Nashville, I casually asked him if he thought Dylan would attend the show. I was thinking it would be highly unlikely for Dylan to perform on the show, but the CMA Awards show is one of country music’s most prestigious nights — and a girl can dream of seeing Dylan be a part of it, right?

I was completely blown away when Rucker told me they actually were talking to Dylan’s camp, trying their best to get him to at least attend the ceremonies in Nashville.

“You know, my dream would be to get up there and sing that song with Ketch and Dylan,” Rucker told me. “That would be awesome, but I don’t know what’s gonna happen with that.”

So might we actually get a performance — or at least an appearance — by Dylan during the CMA Awards? That remains to be seen. But I think all of us, including Rucker, are happy to wait with bated breath.

Airing live on ABC, the 47th annual CMA Awards show takes place Nov. 6 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
