First, Carrie Underwood takes on the role of Maria von Trapp from The Sound of Music, a Broadway musical that opened in 1959. And now she's going to help pay tribute to the songs of 1963? I have no idea what put Underwood in this kind of retro frame of mind, but I think I'm going to like it here.

Underwood will be in Los Angeles for the 65th annual Emmy Awards show airing Sunday night (Sept. 22) on CBS. Actor Don Cheadle will be presenting a tribute to 1963 television milestones -- including President Kennedy's assassination coverage and the Beatles' debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show -- and then Underwood will honor the music of that era.

"It's all about TV and music changing perceptions and defining an era," Underwood said in a recent radio interview. "That was a really big, changing time in our culture, so hopefully it will just be a very beautiful tribute to a very important time."

She also said that personally, she likes to just see what doors open for her and do her best at everything when these "massive, awesome opportunities" present themselves.

"I am a very lucky lady, for sure, and can't wait to just see what doors open up next," she said.

There's no word on exactly what songs she'll be doing from that era, but I'm guessing it will be a very polished medley of the hits from around 1963. Maybe something like "Up on the Roof," "He's So Fine," "I Will Follow Him" and "My Boyfriend's Back." Or maybe she'll stick to all Beatles songs from that year -- "All My Loving," "Please Please Me," "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Love Me Do."

Or maybe she'll throw some old-school country into the mix. You just never know.

Whatever she does, it'll be worth tuning in just to see Underwood. Well, her and awards show host Neil Patrick Harris.
