Carrie Underwood: Gutsy and Gorgeous

There’s a tiny part of the new Women’s Health magazine story on Carrie Underwood where she admits it takes guts to do the upcoming TV production of The Sound of Music.

“The live thing?” she says. “It’s gutsy. It’s ambitious. Music is where I live. But doing other things broadens me and my experiences and what I can do. I’m up for anything.”

But that got me thinking. Underwood has always had a bit of a gutsy side, hasn’t she? I mean, she tried out for American Idol when she was kind of shy. And when Underwood and her band and crew start getting a little worn out from their life on the road, she orders up a parking lot party.

“We get some beers, grill out and don’t worry about anything,” she said.

And it feels like Underwood takes a few risks with her style, too. She does her own hair and makeup on tour — even those gorgeous smoky eyes, clipping in her own hair extension when she wants them and tackling the occasional updo. No easy task, trust me.

Underwood also revealed a hair styling secret she uses — curling her hair with a flatiron.

“You take a section and start twisting,” she advised. “You have to have a flatiron that’s really smooth.”

But to me, the riskiest thing Underwood has done is become obsessed with coconut oil. It’s on her list of things she cannot live without.

“I put it on my food, I put it on my face, I put it on my hair,” she told the magazine. “If it’s winter, the second I get out of the shower, I spread it all over, and it feels really good and it smells good, too.”

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
