The Band Perry: Seven Suggested Cover Songs

“Fat Bottomed Girls” is a no-brainer for The Band Perry. They’ve been putting their own country spin on the 1978 Queen hit for years. Every time I’ve seen the Perrys live, I’ve seen them wow their crowd with that.

“We always cover ’Fat Bottomed Girls’ as like a staple,” Kimberly Perry said in a recent radio interview. “We’re always looking for good covers in our set because with our records we have about seven songs on the radio now. So, we’re always looking for excuses for covers that make sense.”

And now that they are getting ready to take their show on to Europe, the siblings are on the lookout for songs they can cover throughout their We Are Pioneers world tour.

“People expect it at this point from The Band Perry now, I think,” said Neil Perry.

So since they’re probably busy rehearsing and packing for their trip, I thought we could make the band a list of songs they could consider covering.

1. “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” because they obviously love Queen songs from the ’70s and because Dwight Yoakam had a lot of success covering this one.

2. “Rebel Rebel” would be cool because the Perrys must have a thing for old English guys, and David Bowie’s 1974 hit would sound so good with mandolin.

3. Since Kimberly and Reid Perry were both born in the 1980s, maybe Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” would be a good fit.

4. They were discovered by Garth Brooks’ manager, so I think a medley of his hits would go over well. I’d string some up-tempo ones together, like “Two of a Kind, Workin’ on a Full House,” “Papa Loved Mama,” “Ain’t Goin’ Down (’Til the Sun Comes Up)” and “It’s Midnight Cinderella.”

5. Actually, Brooks’ “Ireland” makes the most sense since that’s where a few of their tour stops will be.

6. Kimberly is engaged now, so maybe a wedding song. “Chapel of Love” perhaps?

7. Or maybe something from another artist who was raised in Alabama like the Perrys were. I know Toni Tennille from the Captain & Tennille was, so “Love Will Keep Us Together” would keep things interesting.
