Kacey Musgraves Pushes Boundaries and Earns Praise

"Follow Your Arrow" Singer Is Up for Four Grammys

It’s been a remarkable year for country newcomer Kacey Musgraves, whose feisty debut album, Same Trailer Different Park, has sparked interest in the singer across the entertainment world.

Her forward-thinking project helped earn the Texas native four Grammy nominations — two best country song nominations for writing “Merry Go ’Round” and Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” a nod in the all genre best new artist category and a tip of the hat for best country album.

Musgraves’ latest single, “Follow Your Arrow,” is one of her most critically-examined tracks due to mentions of same-sex relationships and casual marijuana use. It’s been identified as edgy and pushing the envelope of traditional country music subject matter.

“It’s about doing what your heart desires and living your life the way you want it and not the by other people’s opinions,” Musgraves told CMT Hot 20 Countdown . “And I think country radio is ready for that — I mean it’s 2013. I’m tired of the same subject matter and I think I can speak for a lot of other people when I say that everyone else is, too.”

Furthermore, Musgraves says there are aspects of the country genre that she would like to have a hand in modernizing.

“I would love to change a little bit of the country music perspective, some of the close-minded aspects of it,” she admitted. “Really I just want people to feel something when they listen to it.”
