Dierks Bentley: Country’s Clark Griswold

His Kids Inspire More Decorations, Devotion to Christmas

It’s the day after Christmas, and I’m wondering if Dierks Bentley survived all the crazy excitement that typically ensues on days like yesterday. Now I ask because, well — I have no children of my own and frankly I’m happily exhausted from our festivities — but Bentley and his wife Cassidy have three children, including a brand new baby. That is reason enough to go all out and make a big splash during the holidays.

Can you imagine the excitement abounding in that household? Not just for his children, but for Bentley as well. Making new memories and watching your babies’ eyes light up at the sight of a Christmas tree, the thought of Santa Claus — I can’t think of anything more incredible myself.

And Bentley credits his kids for awakening the little boy inside of him during this time of year. Christmas for the singer used to be about relaxing from the road and taking a little time to clear his head — and of course, celebrating the real reason for the season. Thanks to Evie, Jordan and little man Knox, he gets to enjoy the fun parts again, too.

“Christmas didn’t lose any of its real meaning as far as its religious meaning, you know with Jesus’ birthday,” Bentley says. “But then to have a family and all of a sudden it’s like I’m Clark Griswold, out there decorating the tree, putting lights up around the house. All the those things you did as a kid and appreciated as a kid, you get a chance to do over again when you have kids because you kind of become one again.”

I can’t help but picture Bentley precariously positioned on a ladder in a ski vest attempting to staple lights to the gutters of his home. Or trying to light the world’s largest Christmas tree practically bursting through the windows of his living room — all very reminiscent of Chevy Chase in the classic movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Something tells me Bentley knew better than to make many of Clark Griswold’s mistakes going into the holidays this year, and even if he did, his kids would still think he was the world’s greatest dad.
