Harry Connick Jr. Says American Idol May Have Lacked Chemistry Last Season

Oh, the drama of having absolutely no drama. That’s what I think we have in store for us as we settle into this new season of American Idol.

And Harry Connick Jr. admitted to Parade magazine that that lack of drama is one of the reasons that this season — his first one as a judge — will be different.

“Quite frankly, I think the chemistry may have been a little bit off,” Connick said of last year’s judges’ panel which included current judge Keith Urban and ex-judges Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. “I’m a big fan of everybody who was on that panel, but it’s like being with someone in a relationship — why do they click with you? It’s hard to put a finger on it.”

So far, he’s clicking with Urban and Lopez just fine. Connick, said that that’s due, in part, to the fact that the three of them can agree to disagree, in a respectful way.

“We can disagree about things, and it’s never ugly,” he said.

I think they’re also clicking because of the sense of humor Connick brings to the table. Last year, no one on the panel was very funny. And funny really, really matters.

Connick told Parade he’s been at this music thing since he was very young.

“I started plunking notes out at around 3, and I haven’t stopped,” he said.

But what I think is almost as important as the chemistry between the judges is the chemistry between the judges and the contestants. The hopefuls who make it to Hollywood will be spending a lot of time with those judges. Any kind of rapport Connick builds with the lucky ones will do wonders for the show.
