The song put Musgraves on the map in 2013 and at the forefront of a movement in country music where females and frankness were (and are) poised to rule supreme again.
In a recent interview with Radio.com , Musgraves talked about that incredible moment the first time she heard the single on the radio.
“I heard the first few licks of the song, and I didn’t know how it would affect me,” she said. “I’m not always super emotional. When I heard the first part of the song, I just started bawling my eyes out.”
It’s the ultimate goal of an artist to be casually driving in your car one day, minding your traffic signals, maybe running to the grocery store. And then, boom, all of a sudden, you hear your single on the radio in real-time. You hear your voice, your song and realize your dream has come true. You remember the song in its infancy when it was just an idea in your head and nothing more.
Ironically, “Merry Go ‘Round” began that casually. Musgraves told Radio.com the song was actually inspired by an off-the-cuff comment from co-writer Shane McAnally’s mom. Referring to a neighbor, she said, Well, I don’t know if she’s selling Mary Kay or Mary Jane.”
Back to that tear-inducing moment when she first heard the song on the airwaves. Sept. 17 was the big day while she was driving around Nashville with her sister, a photographer who captured the moment on film, complete with Musgraves “freaking out, cussing and trying not to wreck her car.”
And just as she was freaking out to hear the tune through her car stereo, so were all the listeners. Musgraves said it’s a song everyone can relate to, noting, “It’s not a small-town thing. It’s a life thing.”
And now, it’s a Grammy thing. “Merry Go ‘Round” won best country song at the recent Grammy Awards , where Musgraves also took home best country album honors for her debut project, Same Trailer Different Park.
