Billy Ray Cyrus: Miley’s Career Advice Leads to More “Achy Breaky” Controversy

More Than 6 Million Served After Buck 22's Hip-Hop Remake of Cyrus' 1992 Hit

And people thought Billy Ray Cyrus had a hot video in 1992 when he was dancing onstage to the original recording of “Achy Breaky Heart.” The guy is suddenly hotter than he’s been in a long time, thanks to some career advice from daughter Miley Cyrus.

No, the elder Cyrus keeps on all of his his clothes in Buck 22’s hip-hop video for “Achy Breaky 2,” a sexually charged, intergalactic update of “Achy Breaky Heart,” although there appears to be plenty of carefully-placed electrical tape repurposed as costumes for some of the female characters.

In a recent radio interview, the singer acknowledged that Miley knows best when it comes to breaking out of his comfort zone.

“Miley had said to me, ’If the world says go left, go right,'” he said. “And I looked at her, and I said, ’You know what? I’m gonna take your advice on that.'”

Say what you will about Miley, but she has an uncanny knack for knowing how and when to grab media attention. The amped up hip-hop version of “Achy Breaky Heart” has already racked up more than 6 million video streams. Capitalizing on the notoriety, Billy Ray and Buck 22 even stopped by Chelsea Lately to serenade TV host Chelsea Handler on Valentine’s Day.

It’s been great publicity for Buck 22, too, whose street cred began as the son of singer Dionne Warwick.

Much of the critical reaction has been … well … pretty brutal.

“This unholy marriage of faux country and pseudo hip-hop is literally the worst of both worlds,” the Daily Beast website observed. “If ’Achy Breaky 2’ plays at even one bar mitzvah party, that’s one bar mitzvah party too many. Even horny 13-year-olds deserve better than this.”

“Maybe Billy Ray Cyrus wanted to give his daughter Miley a little break from the spotlight,” Entertainment Weekly reported. “Or maybe he has lost his mind. Those seem like the only two reasonable explanations for ’Achy Breaky 2.'”

Having supported his daughter after the backlash of her twerking during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Cyrus is now amused over reaction to the “Achy Breaky 2” video.

“One critic wrote out there that it made Miley’s VMA performance look like Sesame Street,” he told The Tennessean, Nashville’s daily newspaper. “That’s the greatest compliment I’ve ever been given. I was still skeptical, but when the video came out, one of the critics wrote, ’It’s only been out six hours and it’s already 2014’s worst song.’ When I heard that, I knew I nailed it.”

He added, “I’ve been in this business long enough to know that if you see that door crack the slightest bit open, you better get through it because it can close really quick,” he said. “I think what’s next for me is very similar to 1992. I came in the backdoor the first time.”
