Keith Urban Gets Points for Song Choice

I know a good thing when I see it. And right now, that is Keith Urban.

On the latest installment of Idol Chatter, the online video series, there is actually very little chatter at all. In fact, Urban and his bandmates Chris McHugh, Brian Nutter and Danny Radar are just rehearsing in a trailer on the American Idol lot. Dressed casually, with Urban on a baby guitar (and McHugh playing a pretty sizable cardboard box), the musicians sound like they've been playing this tune for years.

They're practicing for Thursday night's (May 1) show when Urban will be performing "Good Thing" off his Fuse album.

The song -- not to be confused with his "Sweet Thing" song from 2008 -- is one of my favorites from his Fuse album. So if he's doing it on Idol, does that mean it's going to be his follow-up single to "Cop Car"? (Although he did do "Even the Stars Fall 4 U" on the 2014 ACM Awards back in April, so maybe that's in the running, too.)

Either way, "Good Thing" is a great song choice for the last leg of this American Idol season. It's kind of an upbeat mood-lifting rocker that will show remaining contestants how it's done.

Urban co-wrote "Good Thing" with Mike Elizondo, whose songwriting credits include Urban's "Red Camaro." And while the country thing may be new for Elizondo -- who is known more for his work with Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Maroon 5, Pink and so many others -- his craft clearly translates just fine. And how he was able to shift from lyrics like "We gonna sip Bacardi like it's your birthday" ("In Da Club") and "Batman brought his own Robin, oh God, Saddam's got his own Laden" ("Business") to lines like Urban's "You got somethin' like I ain't never see before/Yeah, I know a sweet dream when I dream it/Just give me one chance, and you'll never be lonely no more" makes me wonder if there's anything this man can't write.
