Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus Sustained by Mom’s Prayers

I just learned something about Jay DeMarcus’ mother. She’s just like me.

In a recent interview provided by their record label, the Rascal Flatts member talked about how much his mother — and her faith and her prayers — made him the man he is today.

And I understand that. Not a day goes by that I don’t pray for my own three kids. It comes with the job, as they say. But, still, it’s nice to hear it being acknowledged.

And it’s nice to hear how much those prayers mean to DeMarcus.

“I’ve been really, really fortunate to have a mother that has spent many, many long hours on her knees praying for me,” he says. “And I guarantee you, I would almost bet everything I have that that has saved me more often than not. So it sustains me. My faith and my beliefs sustain me through all of the craziness that this life brings.”

The craziness for DeMarcus right now probably comes from balancing his family life (two little kids with his wife Allison) and his work life (a new Rascal Flatts album, Rewind, due out on May 13). But that craziness is no match for his strong faith.

“I’m not a perfect human being by any stretch of the imagination,” he said. “But there is always this little voice inside of me that keeps me where I know I need to be.”

With Mother’s Day right around the corner — Sunday (May 11), in fact — it’s so sweet to hear DeMarcus talk about his own mother and the ways that she went above and beyond the laundry, cooking, cleaning, carpooling and other routines of motherhood.

“My beliefs and my faith are part of who I am, and I’m so grateful that I had the foundation laid early on,” he said. “My mom took me to church from my earliest memories, so I’m grateful to have had that foundation laid early, and it’s just part of who I am.”
