Backstage at the Bridgestone Arena, CMT host Cody Alan caught the band off-guard when he tried to find out who’s the first member to starting drinking during the day. Finally, Phillip Sweet chimed in with a simple, “Me.”
The remark cracked up Jimi Westbrook and Kimberly Schlapman. And although you could tell she had been thinking of a polite way to reply, Karen Fairchild instead dryly added, “The one who just made that comment, yeah… pretty much.”
Asked for specifics of their performance on the show, the band preferred it to be a surprise.
“We’ve been working on this a long time,” Fairchild said. “And the CMT Awards are like a good luck charm for this band. I mean, two years in a row, we have had magical moments on this stage. So, I don’t want to give anything away.”
“It’s going to be bold,” Westbrook noted.
“Yes, ‘bold’ is a good word,” Fairchild agreed.
Alan asked if the band members’ families ever took summer vacations together, and Fairchild teased him, “Every day’s a vacation.” Then she looked at Westbrook, who is also her husband, and asked, “Are we going to get to go anywhere?”
Alan wrapped up the casual chat by asking about the band’s upcoming album, expected to be released this fall. The album has been titled, but the band politely declined to reveal it just yet. After looking off-camera at their manager for permission, Fairchild turned to Cody and admitted, “We just got the big ‘no.'”
“I thought we were the bosses, but apparently not,” Sweet deadpanned.
“Apparently, we get bossed around,” Fairchild said, with a smile.
