“I thought we were keeping it quiet, but I found out we weren’t keeping it quiet,” Bryan said during rehearsals of the awards show airing live Wednesday (June 4) at 8 p.m. ET. “It’s gonna be me, FGL — Florida Georgia Line — and Jason Derulo . It’s gonna be pretty awesome.
“We’re gonna kick it off with ‘This Is How We Roll,’ and then Jason comes in and hits a little bit of ‘Talk Dirty.’ What’s funny is that I’ve been just kind of singing that — just cuttin’ up at the end of ‘Country Girl (Shake It for Me)’ — out on the That’s My Kind of Night tour. … I just think it’s a fun dance song. It’s kind of like the hip-hop version of ‘Country Girl (Shake It for Me).’”
Bryan obviously has a lengthy friendship with Florida Georgia Line, but the CMT Music Awards will be his first time to perform with Derulo.
“I saw Jason for the first time out at the Billboard Awards,” he said. “His performance was amazing. I’m excited. It will be just a great performance. It’ll be a lot of fun.”
Later in the show, Bryan will return to the stage for a solo performance of his latest No. 1 single, “Play It Again.”
“It’s going to be cool because I’m coming in through a corridor into the middle of the crowd,” he said. “You can rehearse it, but you never know what’s gonna happen.”
On the other hand, despite any rehearsals, Bryan never really knows what’s going to happen when he hits the stage.
“I’m never good at really rehearsing during rehearsals,” he said. “You have certain spots you want to be in, certain marks, blocking and stuff, but when you fill the room full of fans, it certainly makes for a different dynamic, and it’s fun to interact with them.”
Bryan confirms the CMT Music Awards’ reputation for being a time for artists and fans to unwind in a casual atmosphere.
“There’s tons of comedy throughout the whole show,” he said. “It’s a big laugh, a big party. When all the fans are here for CMA Music Fest, there’s just a big energy in the whole city, and CMT does a great job at creating a big, fun time. They’ve always done such a good job at making it just a big party.”
