Dolly Parton Rocks Glastonbury Festival

Richie Sambora Helped Her Feel Like a Rock Star During UK Performance

She came. She saw. She conquered. Yep, Dolly Parton rocked the Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom alongside Metallica, Jack White, Robert Plant and — wait for it — De La Soul.

The living legend delighted more than 200,000 fans Sunday afternoon (June 29) at the famous festival and proved that everybody has a little bit of country in them.

According to The Guardian newspaper , Parton was dressed to perfection in a tight white, rhinestone-bedazzled jump suit only she could wear and delivered a set that included some of her biggest hits like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “I Will Always Love You” and “Islands in the Stream.” She performed the latter hit without Kenny Rogers, unfortunately, but rock guitar legend Richie Sambora showed up for a gospel-infused retelling of Bon Jovi’s “Lay Your Hands on Me.”

Of course, equally as entertaining as her musical moments were her moments of banter with the crowd, which the newspaper points out included jokes on the story of “Jolene,” an original rap about the festival’s muddy conditions and a few pretty “bawdy” puns followed by Parton grabbing a banjo, fiddle and saxophone before breaking into an instrumental version of the theme to the The Benny Hill Show, a staple of British television for decades.

Meeting with the media prior to her performance, Parton talked about her first-ever visit to the festival.

“I saw all the tents and the people, and I can’t believe after all these years I’ve never done Glastonbury before,” she said. “I’m so excited to be part of this whole thing. I’m just a country girl and now I feel like a rock star.”

And it’s this kind of humility that proves you can take the “Backwoods Barbie” out of East Tennessee, but you can’t take the East Tennessee out of the one-and-only Parton. And who would want to anyway?

Her European tour continues through July 14 with concerts in England, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
