Jake Owen threw the ultimate beach bash in an unlikely location over the weekend — the famous desert oasis of the Las Vegas strip.
As part of the Mandalay Bay Beach Concert Series, the singer’s headlining show on Saturday night (Aug. 9) filled the hotel and casino’s poolside venue with thousands of country fans ready to party.
“I’ve really honestly never done anything like this before,” Owen told CMT Hot 20 Countdown , “but I think it fits pretty well with what our show’s all about. I mean, our whole stage set looks like a tiki bar around here.”
Owen rode “Beachin’” straight to the top of the charts in July, much like he did with “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” and “Alone With You” before that. As a result of his string of smash hits, Owen has gotten used to playing for thousands of fans at stadium shows around the country.
“One thing that we incorporated on our tour this year … I always noticed anytime a fan came onstage, not only did it make the fan’s life being onstage, but everybody else that was in the crowd was kind of envious of that person. So we added these tiki bars on the edge of our stage. During the show, we’ll bring people up to just hang out on the side of the stage for the whole night.”
In addition to the new stage setup, Owen is also changing up the pace with his latest release. Coming out of the high energy of “Beachin’,” “What We Ain’t Got” hit radio delivering a more somber, serious tone.
“It was just important for me to put out a song that I thought has a lot of depth to it and means something,” Owen revealed. “‘Beachin” and ‘Barefoot Blue Jean Night’ and songs like that have been huge for my career, but it’s important for me to have a long career. I think you need to have songs that are viable, and, you know, I’d like to be nominated for song of the year.
“Plus, my respect for country music has always been that I love great songs, and ‘What We Ain’t Got’ is an amazingly written song. I’m proud to be the guy that gets to sing it.”
