'Swamp Pawn''s Coy Gomez Dies in Louisiana

Cast Member of CMT Series Fought Lengthy Battle With Cancer

Coy Gomez, who gained national attention as a cast member of CMT's Swamp Pawn reality series, died Monday (Aug. 18) following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 68.

A native of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, George Coy Gomez loved the swamps of Louisiana as a hunter and fisherman since he was a young child.

On Swamp Pawn, he and his son, Brian "Shorty" Gomez were the mismatched team of fishermen who spent much of their time arguing, looking for work and trying to make a living. Coy's demeanor as a quiet, reserved and thoughtful backwoods gentleman was in stark contrast to Shorty's brash, scattershot approach to life.

Coy Gomez's illness was detailed in the most recent season of the series. The new season of Swamp Pawn is scheduled to premiere this fall.

He is also survived by two other children -- Christy Duke Gomez and Dwayne Gomez -- along with two brothers and several grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday in Donaldsonville.
