When Little Big Town suggested that maybe they could record a duet with Blake Shelton, he told them no. Because, he joked, “I don’t owe you guys crap.”
And even though there is some serious music championing going on in this exclusive clip from the set of The Voice, it’s the special blend of sarcasm and quick wit that I know will make this episode with Little Big Town one of this season’s best.
Shelton admits to the group — Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet — that having them on the show to mentor was the most fun he’d ever had on the show. Probably because they’ve all been friends for roughly 15 years.
Fairchild did the math and let Shelton know just how long it’s been since they met.
“It was 10 marriages ago,” she says.
(I have no idea how she arrived at that number. That would mean all five of them were married twice. What am I missing?)
But you can tell that when it’s time to get down to business, Little Big Town picked up on how to mentor like it’s their job.
“The only person that will stop you is you,” Fairchild tells a contestant in an obviously moving pep talk.
And while Sweet seems happy to be in that mentoring role, he knows the contestants on Team Blake are lucky to have him for the rest of the season.
“You have a lot to offer them with your advice and with your talent,” Sweet tells Shelton. “They’re in good hands.”
The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
