Kid Rock Helped Bring Jason Aldean and Bob Seger Together

'CMT Crossroads: Bob Seger and Jason Aldean' Premieres Friday (Nov. 28)

What happens when one of country’s biggest stars joins forces with an icon of classic rock? The type of magic that happened during the recent taping of CMT Crossroads: Bob Seger and Jason Aldean.

As it turns out, the pairing of Seger and Aldean has been four years in the making.

“We both know Kid Rock, a good friend of both of ours,” Seger said during an interview with CMT Hot 20 Countdown. “And Kid Rock first told me in 2010 that Jason was a fan. … And I kind of filed it away. I said, ‘Oh, jeez, if he’s a fan, I’d kind of like to do Crossroads someday with him. You know, really, it was my first choice.”

Aldean was taking time off the road when he got the invitation to perform with Seger for the CMT Crossroads special.

“I was off, but there’s no way I’m passing that up,” he said.

“This is one of my idols,” Aldean continued. “This is somebody who shaped the way I listen to music and the way I make it. And so, to hear him say that and to hear that he’s a fan of what we do, to me, that’s a compliment.”

Describing himself as a “huge fan,” Seger said he has all of Aldean’s albums.

In preparing to perform together, Aldean quickly learned that Seger appeals to a multigenerational audience.

“I have an 11-year-old daughter,” Aldean said. “I was playing some stuff and telling her that we were getting ready to do this show, and I was like, ‘Here’s some songs.’ I played ‘Against the Wind.’ She like, ‘I know that song. It was in Forrest Gump!’”

“Against the Wind” and “Turn the Page” are just two of Seger’s songs selected for CMT Crossroads. Aldean’s catalog will be represented by “Night Train” and other hits.

“I love playing with these guys,” Seger said. “It’s so much fun, you know? I love Jason and his band. They’re just hard-edged, and it’s just the kind of stuff I love to play.”

CMT Crossroads: Bob Seger and Jason Aldean premieres Friday (Nov. 28) at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CMT.
