Jamey Johnson Warms Up With “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”

Holiday EP Marks His Return to Recording

After several years away from the scene, Jamey Johnson is making a welcome holiday visit with The Christmas Song, an EP that includes many of his favorite seasonal tunes.

One such number is “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” which finds the honky-tonk hero stoking the romantic fire with Hawaiian singer Lily Meola.

“Lily’s voice is a force to be reckoned with,” Johnson said. “Anybody who hasn’t heard her sing is in for a treat. She is just an old soul in a young body. I love the concept of the song because I heard somebody describe it as ‘wolf and mouse.’ I thought it was a fun song just because of that playful nature.”

The collection also includes “Pretty Paper,” a country classic written by Willie Nelson. In fact, Johnson recorded his vocals in the same studio where Nelson captured Red Headed Stranger. He gives his rendition of “Mele Kalikimaka” and “The Christmas Song,” as well.

Rejoice! There’s also a brand new Johnson composition — his first one to be released in four years — called “South Alabam Christmas,” written with Bill Anderson and Buddy Cannon. Look for more music to follow in 2015 from Johnson’s newly-founded label, Big Gassed Records.

“The new song on the Christmas record begins the new music. From now on, as soon as I can get it written and recorded, we will make it available,” Johnson said. “I am looking forward to getting new music out there. I know our fans have been asking about it, and I’m going to do my part to see that we get it to them.”

That’s the best New Year’s resolution I’ve heard so far, even if it is only December. In the meantime, enjoy Jamey Johnson and Lily Meola’s flirtatious “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
