I think most married men know the simple Happy-Wife-Happy-Life rule: If she is good, then everyone is good. That doesn’t mean they are all living by the mantra, but they at least know of it.
So, to that end, this is how Shelton tries to keep the peace with his wife Miranda Lambert. Especially during awards-show season.
“It doesn’t do good for me to be competitive with her,” he said on Jimmy Kimmel Live, “because just the idea of me going, ‘Haha, I’m gonna beat you,’ it already sets the wrong tone.”
Instead, he tells Lambert how deserving she is of any and all awards.
He high fives her and tells her things like, “I hope you beat me” and “I hope you win because you’re better.”
Lambert herself is competitive, but Shelton says he lets her roll right over him. Whether it’s about who is bringing home more trophies, or who gets to record hit songs they wrote together.
“Let me back up here: I don’t get a say-so,” Shelton reiterated, adding that he makes sure Lambert knows it’s all about her. “Have you heard her music? All her music is about killing guys and burning their houses down and beating up people.”
“That is my wife,” Shelton said, with equal parts pride and panic in his voice.
