Regardless of what you think about the state of the union or President Obama’s State of the Union address earlier this week, at least country music has a lengthy history of offering optimism to Americans.
A case in point is Brooks & Dunn’s “Only in America,” which seemed like just another catchy single when it was released in June 2001. The message became more vital to the nation after the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City.
Written by Kix Brooks, Don Cook and Ronnie Rogers, it was the second single from Brooks & Dunn’s Steers & Stripes album. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard country chart on Oct. 27, 2001, and was later used on the campaign trail at political rallies for Obama, former President George W. Bush, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, among others.
