Martina McBride Madly in Love With Valentine's Day

She Performs Saturday for Military Personnel and Families

A morning phone call from Martina McBride? Oh, yeah, that’s definitely something to love.

Earlier this week, I got to catch up with the superstar, whom I absolutely adore, and talk everything from touring to movies to classic love songs -- and, of course, Valentine’s Day.

I was even lucky enough to get some solid love advice, too. More on that later.

And all this took place as McBride was rolling down the highway to the next destination on her current tour. On Saturday (Feb. 14), she’ll stop in Galveston, Texas, and hop aboard Carnival’s Freedom to perform a very special concert for U.S. military men and women and their families. And she couldn’t be more thrilled about this particular show.

“I think it’s just going to be amazing,” McBride told me. “I think it’s going to be a fun time for them to be there and for us to play.”

It’s not the first time she’s performed for the cruise line, but this added bonus of singing for these military families during the celebration gives the show new meaning for her. She’s also packing a few surprises in the set just for them in honor of Valentine’s Day -- like her big hit, “Valentine.”

“They spend so many holidays apart, you know?” she noted. “And we always talk about Christmas and New Year’s and Thanksgiving, and there’s so many military families that don’t get to spend that time with their loved ones, so this is really special.”

What a treat for them. But then I started thinking about McBride’s Valentine’s Day plans and whether or not she would have the opportunity to celebrate with her honey, longtime hubby John McBride, who’s also her lighting and sound engineer.

The two are always usually together, working side by side with all the mutual love and respect two people making a life together could ever hope to enjoy. It’s no wonder they rank on pretty much everyone’s list of power couples to admire and emulate.

Even though they are romantic royalty by all accounts and will be together this weekend, this Valentine’s Day might be a less than glamorous one for the pair.

“We’ll be riding the bus home,” she chuckled. “Maybe we’ll watch a romantic movie or maybe stop somewhere nice for dinner.”

I had to try and offer a solution to their conundrum in case of a Valentine’s emergency: a bus viewing of the rom-com classic Love Actually and a bucket of chicken.

“Oh, my gosh, that’s one of John’s favorite movies!” she said. “The fact that he loves it so much is sweet.”

And there it is, y’all. That when it’s real love, real life and all its hiccups never actually get in the way. More often than not, the hiccups and mishaps only make way for the most magical of memories.

So what is their secret? How do McBride and her hubby keep the love alive in their chaotic lives?

For the singer, it’s easy.

“We’re just really good friends,” she said with a heartwarming laugh. “We met before we got into Nashville and the business, moved here together as a married couple as newlyweds. We just like each other a lot -- as well as love each other.”

McBride is currently out on her Everlasting tour named for her glorious album of the same name and promoting her cookbook and all-around entertaining guidebook, Around the Table.
