Tim McGraw on Oscars: “Honored to Be Asked”

Brace Yourself for Glen Campbell Tribute

Just when I thought I’d outgrown the need to stay glued to my TV during the Oscars, there’s a brand new reason to tune in — Tim McGraw.

But not just McGraw. This is McGraw covering Glen Campbell. And I have a good feeling there won’t be a dry eye in the house during the live broadcast on Sunday night (Feb. 22).

He is going to be singing “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” which Campbell co-wrote with Julian Raymond for the documentary, Glen Campbell … I’ll Be Me. The song is nominated for an Academy Award for best original song. The film shadowed Campbell, his family and his crew around on his final tour.

“I’m honored to be asked to sing this powerful song from one of the true legends of the music industry,” McGraw says on his website.

A true legend that, sadly, won’t be there in Hollywood to bask in that glory. Campbell moved into a healthcare facility in Nashville in April after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011.

To brace yourself for McGraw’s moving performance, get to know the lyrics before the show:

I’m still here, but yet I’m gone
I don’t play guitar or sing my songs
They never defined who I am

The man that loves you ’til the end
You’re the last person I will love
You’re the last face I will recall
And best of all, I’m not gonna miss you

Not gonna miss you
I’m never gonna hold you like I did
Or say I love you to the kids
You’re never gonna see it in my eyes

It’s not gonna hurt me when you cry
I’m never gonna know what you go through
All the things I say or do
All the hurt and all the pain

One thing selfishly remains
I’m not gonna miss you
I’m not gonna miss you
