Taylor Swift’s Mom Steals the Show at ACM Awards

The Most Moving Three Minutes of the Night

Less than two weeks before Sunday’s (April 19) Academy of Country Music Awards, Taylor Swift revealed that her mother Andrea is battling cancer.

And then at the awards show, Swift’s mother walked boldly to the stage and revealed just what kind of parent she is — a very proud one.

She was there to present her daughter with one of the ACM’s six Milestone awards of the night.

Andrea typically avoids the spotlight and seems to be more comfortable working with Taylor behind the scenes, so this rare appearance was a special one for Swift, the record-breaking audience and all the viewers watching the show from home.

“I’ve watched this Milestone artist from the time she was a tangled-haired little girl growing up on our farm, full of imagination and creativity, until right now as she prepares for her next world tour,” Swift began. “And ever since then, her favorite thing to do has been to write a song, tell a story, play a guitar or piano. And I’ve seen those things carry her through every emotion and every experience in her life — good or bad.”

The she told the story of Taylor writing one of her most popular songs.

“Every once in a while, her dad, her brother or I find ourselves to be the subject of those songs,” Andrea said. “Sometimes, we’re merely the inspiration. Like the time she was 17 years old, and her dad and I strongly disapproved of a certain young man. And rightfully so.

“But she was mad. She was real mad. So she went to her room and she closed the door, and she came out about an hour later with a song called ‘Love Story.’”

Andrea also opened up about what Taylor has talked about — and written songs about — so often in her career.

“I witnessed a young girl with very few friends become a young woman with many,” she said, “learning to stand up for herself and the things she believes in, being brave enough to explore her musical curiosity, having a voice against those who hate and giving of herself to those in need.”

She wrapped up the three-minute presentation by admitting she is a very proud mom and thanking the music community for taking such good care of her daughter.

“To the fans, I know you love her as I love her. And for that, I thank you eternally. And so, it’s my pleasure, my pride and my joy to introduce my daughter Taylor Swift,” she said as Swift kissed her father, hugged Dierks Bentley’s wife Cassidy and then made her way to the stage.
