Kelsea Ballerini Makes a Little Chart History

"Love Me Like You Mean It" Becomes First Solo Female Debut to Hit No. 1 Since 2006

Kelsea Ballerini’s fans love her and they mean it! The singer’s debut single, “Love Me Like You Mean It,” made radio history this week when it soared to No. 1 on the country airplay charts.

It’s the first solo female debut to achieve the landmark since Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take the Wheel” in 2006.

“It’s ridiculous!” Ballerini told CMT Hot 20 Countdown. “You go into the first single so hopeful, and I couldn’t have been more confident with that song. But, still, it’s scary. It’s your first single, it’s your first impression with people. I was really excited about it, but the fact that it’s working and people are liking it and singing it now at shows and knowing it, that’s like all you can hope for in a first single.

Ballerini’s Twitter account was flooded with congratulations, and her own status said it all – “Life is cool.” However, the milestone is just the icing on the cake of an already monumental year. The young singer has quickly become a household name in addition to being nominated in the CMT Music Awards breakthrough video of the year category, being selected one of CMT’s Next Women of Country and co-headlining the inaugural CMT Next Women of Country Tour with Jana Kramer.

“I really do feel like the last few months of my life has been crazy,” she said. “I remember when CMT started the group, Next Women, and it was the Kacey Musgraves and Brandy Clarks and Ashley Monroes, and I was signed as a songwriter at the time. But I remember looking at those women and thinking, like, ‘These are the game changers.’ I just felt so proud to be a part of this wave of women right now.

Ballerini is also among the country stars currently blazing up the CMT Hot 20 Countdown. Don’t miss an all-new episode this Saturday and Sunday (June 27-28) at 9 a.m. ET/PT.
