Maddie & Tae Bring Opry Spirit to Chicago

Duo Talk About What the Grand Ole Opry Means to Them

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry, Maddie & Tae brought a replica of the venue’s famed six-foot wooden circle to the Chicago White Sox game on Friday night (July 31).

But they also brought some pretty vivid memories of their own Opry experiences.

The first was a few years ago when Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye were just two teenagers from Texas and Oklahoma, respectively. They had traveled to Nashville and had a chance to see Vince Gill and Kellie Pickler perform at the Opry.

Before Maddie & Tae’s pre-game concert on the White Sox field, they told me all about that special night at the Opry.

“The show was amazing. And then we waited in a line of about 200 people to meet Kellie that day, and get her CD and her autograph,” Marlow recalled. “She wrote, ‘You’re beautiful, Maddie’ and ‘You’re beautiful, Taylor.’”

The next few years brought the duo closer to their own country music dreams and, sure enough, in September 2014, Maddie & Tae made their very own Opry debut.

“It was such a huge deal for us,” Dye said. “We spent a week picking out outfits. We flew our entire families up. Just because that was something we’d been dreaming of since we were little girls.”

Maddie & Tae’s debut album Start Here will be released on Aug. 28.
