Keith Urban Wants Fans to “Paint Their Own Picture”

Why He Didn’t Want a Literal Approach in Latest Music Video

When Keith Urban introduced his new video for “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16,” he said, “I’m not good at articulating all these sorts of things.”

And yet, he is very, very good at it.

The way he describes the process of making the video — his first with director Shane Drake — is that they tried to avoid making it exactly like the lyrics. So visuals of John Cougar, a John Deere tractor and a page from the Gospel according to John? You won’t find those in this video.

“It was a fun video to do. It was challenging,” Urban said in a video he made to give fans his perspective on the artsy endeavor, “because we didn’t want it to be 100 percent literal about every lyric. That was the most important thing to me. So it became more about playing, more about performing.”

The end result might be Urban’s coolest video since “Without You.”

“I like everybody being to be able to paint their own picture of things. So there’s sort of more random imagery and so forth,” he says.
