CMT Hot 20 Countdown is delving into the archives for a very special video flashback episode this weekend. Some of the industry’s hottest artists are helping to count down all their favorite country videos.
Although music videos continue to come and go, the truly great ones are remembered as ones where music and visual images merge to become true art.
“There’s a few moments in history where the video turned the song into something way larger than it would’ve been,” Brad Paisley says. “And that’s a real lightning in a bottle thing that you try to get as an artist.”
Trisha Yearwood has her favorite videos, too, including Miranda Lambert’s “White Liar.”
“I like ‘White Liar’ because I love the whole wedding thing — and then it being off,” she said. “I like the funniness of that. Which makes me then throwback to Dixie Chicks’ ‘Ready to Run,’ and they’re all in their wedding dresses on the bikes which is really, really fun.”
One of her personal favorites is Garth Brooks’ video for “The Dance.”
“I like videos that are really interesting,” Yearwood said. “And I say this one not because I’m married to the guy, but one of the most iconic music videos I think in our time and our history would have to be ‘The Dance.’
“I think that the music video took that song to a whole other level. The song itself, that Tony Arata wrote, was about a relationship. The video took it to such a bigger place. I think when you’re talking about how a video can really transform a song, that is a prime example.”
Whether it was a poignantly striking theme or one that recruited rowdy friends, all of these videos served as inspiration for generations to come. Find out which ones your favorite stars selected on an all-new episode of CMT Hot 20 Countdown this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 5-6) at 9 a.m. ET/PT.
