Carrie Underwood on Motherhood, Fitness and Her New Album

Superstar Visits With CMT Hot 20 Countdown

Carrie Underwood’s new Calia active wear line just made its grand debut at New York Fashion Week. The superstar has become somewhat of a spokesperson for a healthy and active life in recent years, having revealed tips and routines through social media.

She recently sat down with CMT Hot 20 Countdown’s Cody Alan to talk about fitness now that she’s a mom.

“I think you’ve got to cut yourself some slack,” she said. “Our bodies, men and women, are designed to do amazing things, and women are the ones that are lucky enough to get to have that experience … to get to make a baby, you know?

“And it’s beautiful and it’s amazing, and there’s stuff about you that will never be the same. But it’s OK. And you work out when you can, and you treat your body as good as you can with what you put into it. … I don’t know if you’ll ever feel back to normal. I don’t know if I’ll ever be back to normal, but this is the new normal, and I feel good about it.”

Underwood’s lifestyle and new active wear line aren’t the only things keeping her on the go. She’s been hard at work in the studio, as well. While her latest single, “Smoke Break,” fittingly calls for a bit of a personal timeout, she’s been doing anything but that.

“When we wrote it, we were very careful to try to make the metaphor as clear as a metaphor can be … by putting. ‘I don’t smoke, but sometimes I need a smoke break,’” she said. “You know, sometimes I need a step away. Sometimes I need a minute just for me– just to take a step away.”

Underwood recently revealed details about her highly anticipated upcoming album, Storyteller,

“It’s hard to name an album,” she said. “I was thinking about, ‘Is there a song title that really represents the album as a whole?’ No, because we kind of go in different directions. It all belongs together, but there wasn’t one that just stood out like, ‘Oh, yes, that would be a great album title.’”

After analyzing the new material she’s recorded, Underwood realized Storyteller was the perfect choice.

“There’s a lot of stories,” she said. “Whether they’re personal stories or we’ve made up characters and they’re doing stuff, it just seemed like that’s what I’m doing is telling stories. So Storyteller just seemed like a good fit.”

With the album set for an Oct. 23 release, fans can catch Underwood as she and Brad Paisley co-host the 49th annual CMA Awards on Nov. 4 in Nashville.

For more exclusive details on Storyteller, don’t miss an all new episode of CMT Hot 20 Countdown this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 19-20) at 9 a.m. ET/PT.
