Steven Tyler’s Blank Slate

Rhett Akin's Porch and a No. 2 Pencil

It’s no surprise that Steven Tyler loves Nashville. Who wouldn’t?

But now I think I can actually pinpoint one of his favorite places in Nashville: Rhett Akins’ front porch.

Akins — a country singer, songwriter and father to Thomas Rhett — has been collaborating with Tyler on his new country music. And Tyler said in a recent radio interview that they way they write songs down in Tennessee is just fine with him.

“I like to walk in with a clean slate — or in my case, a No. 2 pencil and a legal pad — with a bunch a good ‘ol boys, and whether it’s Marti Frederiksen in L.A. in a basement, or it’s on Rhett Akins porch,” Tyler explained, “I like to sit there and talk about the world today, what’s going on right now and get gacked on coffee and then just start from there.”

Tyler added that, “There’s always an idea before a song, because there’s all the years we’ve been musicians and playing, so there’s always cords we can grab from, but I really prefer to come up with a clean slate, and particularly, look at my notes that I’ve taken over the past few months about ideas and songs I’d like to do, things I’d like to say in a song, that’s usually from scratch.”
