In an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Meyers pointed out that country award show monologues tend to be harsher than other shows. “We’re such a family, and everybody there is friends,” Shelton countered, so they are used to the below-the-belt jokes.
But really, wouldn’t you think divorce would be an off limits joke topic? Apparently not. “There has got to be one [joke] about me and Miranda. Brad Paisley would not be doing his job if he doesn’t look down there and go ’Ha-Ha!'”
But since the country community really is one big family, we know it’s all in good fun. Paisley was even kind enough to give Shelton the heads up before mocking him on national television. “We’ve had the conversations like, ’OK, dude. I will go sit there and let you kick me in the face a few times,” said Shelton.
While Shelton may not be itching with excitement for his verbal “kick in the face,” you know he’s looking forward to the CMA after parties. “I remember the beginnings, and they were so much fun!” said Shelton, although it sounds like the beginnings may be all he remembered.
All impending jokes aside, Shelton knows that the country community will always stick together. “If you’re in the country industry, it really is a family. A big, inbred family.”
