The Internet and online music delivery hadn’t even been invented when Brenda Lee released “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in 1958, yet the song has now landed at No. 1 on Billboard’s country streaming songs chart.
To make the season even brighter for the 71-year-old music icon, the track has also No. 1 on the trad publication’s holiday airplay chart and reached the Top 40 on the all-genres Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time since 1961.
Lee was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. She also received a Grammy lifetime achievement award in 2009.
“It’s amazing how that song continues to resonate with every age group and just about everybody,” said Lee, who performed earlier this month during the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Deck the Hall concert series. “I was just a kid when we recorded ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,’ and it makes me feel so good knowing it still brings Christmas joy to others.”
Stars like Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Miley Cyrus, Chicago, Cyndi Lauper and even pop group Hanson have covered the song successfully over the years, but Lee’s take remains the unsurpassed classic.
