Is Sam Smith Country Music’s Newest Fan?

English Singer-Songwriter Seeks Initial Guidance

A couple of weeks ago, English pop superstar Sam Smith casually tweeted that he was ready for some country music.

Since then, more than 600 people retweeted it. More than 2,500 people liked it. And it looks like thousands of people had thousands of recommendations for him. Mostly fans, but even The Band Perry chimed in with a vote for Lady Antebellum.

Someone at Decca Records said he should check out Sam Hunt, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton and the Shires. And another person recommended Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers “by the bucket load.”

But after all of those, I think I have to agree with Ty Herndon the most. He told Smith on Thursday (Feb. 4) that a great start would be Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood and Faith Hill. All the big stars from the early ’90s, when Smith was born.

Smith never explains why he wanted to hear some good country music — and, really, who needs a reason? But maybe the breakout star of last year’s Grammys wants to duet with a country singer or record a country album — or even just add some country elements to his own brand of pop-soul.

I could definitely hear Smith’s “Stay With Me” with the cry of a steel guitar.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
