Kelsea Ballerini has already won the Academy of Country Music Award for new female vocalist. And on Sunday night (April 3), she’ll be competing for an even bigger honor — female vocalist of the year.
That’s quite an accomplishment for a girl who could barely get a good seat at last year’s show.
“I went the the ACMs last year,” Ballerini told CBS This Morning in a recent interview, “and I sat behind the artist section. I thought, “Maybe someday.’ I didn’t think, ‘Maybe next year.’ At all.”
She also opened up about starting to write songs 10 years ago, when she was only 12.
“I think of it as a gift that kind of fell into my lap at a time when I really needed someone to talk to,” she said, adding that she wanted to write songs for girls to “remind ourselves that we need to be loved correctly.”
“I want to be a good person first,” Ballerini said, much wiser than her 22 years, “and a good artist second.”
