Chris Stapleton’s historical success in the past year — and the artists claiming to take credit for helping him get to this point in his career — made for the best bit of the night at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday (April 3).
And when Stapleton came backstage at the end of the evening, after collecting his awards, he admitted he was laughing along with the rest of the audience when all of the top artists stood up — one by one — to stake their claim in his success, saying they were the one who had discovered his talents and given him his start.
“It was a wonderful gift, and I’m very grateful for it. It was a pretty funny monologue, and I didn’t know anything about it. But I thought it might’ve carried on into the night, and I was a little worried about it, because it could’ve gotten darker and darker. It didn’t, so we’re good,” he laughed, saying he thinks those artists actually do deserve the credit more than he does.
And be he ever so humble, Stapleton still thinks it’s hard to justify all the ACM wins.
“When you get this kind of a thing going, I don’t think anybody deserves this,” he said about the six ACM Awards trophies in front of him on the stage. “It’s a lot of luck and stars lining up, so I’m grateful for the moment.”
