Zac Brown Reveals Where the Peaches Grow

He's Convinced Lula, Georgia, Has the Best

When the Zac Brown Band had their very first song out in the summer of 2008, it was hard not to get wrapped up in the images of peaches.

Because “Chicken Fried” kicked off its list of things that are special about the South with those peaches: "I was raised up 'neath the shade of a Georgia Pine/And that's home you know/Sweet tea, pecan pie, and homemade wine/ Where the peaches grow."

And since Brown has since demonstrated he is more than just a singer and a songwriter -- he is an accomplished cook -- he says he knows exactly where to get the best peaches in Georgia.

“In my opinion, in Georgia there’s a town called Lula," he said in a recent radio interview. "And Lula, Georgia, has the best peaches."

Now, Lula is tinier than a map dot, but I’ve actually been there before. Next time, if I’m there during peach season, I’ll definitely pull over at one of those roadside farm stands and see if I agree with Brown.

Brown explains that peaches are delicate fruits, and the trees have to be protected from fungus that can wipe them out and render them useless. He knows that from personal peach experience.

“I had an old (peach tree) on my property and it was there forever and just one day it was gone," he said. "So they’re not quite as hardy just to grow in the back yard as some other stuff is, but there are some amazing orchards in Georgia.”
