How Carrie Underwood’s Dad Made a Bad Day Good

All It Took Was a Kind Word

It’s hard to imagine a day when Carrie Underwood didn’t look and feel gorgeous.

But there was one, back when she was in middle school.

“One day, when I was about 14 years old, I’d had a particularly rough day at school because I had been teased by a boy in one of my classes,” Underwood recently told People. “He made fun of my makeup. Hey, I was just 14. … I was still learning how to do it.”

But later on that day, it was her dad who kind of turned things around for her.

“At dinner that night, for no reason at all, my dad told me that I looked really pretty. He had no clue about what happened that day, nor is he exactly the kind of guy to give out compliments like that freely,” she said when the magazine asked Underwood, “What’s the most beautiful thing anyone has ever said to you?”

Underwood says that her father’s words “turned a bad day into a really good one.”

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
