Memorial Day: Tim McGraw on Those Looking Out for Us

"They Sacrifice Everything"

It's already been nine years since Tim McGraw first performed his song "If You're Reading This" on the 2007 Academy of Country Music Awards.

Co-written with Brad and Brett Warren of the Warren Brothers, it was a tribute to fallen soldiers and was written in the form of a letter sent home from a soldier who died serving our country.

I have always thought there was no better song to play on Memorial Day. Before the parades start, before the picnics begin, it's the perfect way to start the celebrating.

In a recent radio interview, McGraw talked about what the day means to him.

“We get to do a lot of things in this country. We have a lot of freedoms and no matter ups and downs -- or good or bad or whatever -- it’s still the best country in the world to live in," McGraw said.

"It’s only that way because we have these guys that are out there looking out for us," he added. "It doesn’t matter what your politics are. It doesn’t matter what your religion is or any of those things. If you’re an American, you’re proud to have those guys out there. … They sacrifice everything. We just need to vocalize that as much as possible.”
