JoJo, a real-estate developer from Texas, and Luke, a war veteran from Texas, spent some time in the country on last week’s episode of The Bachelorette. Then on Wednesday (June 8), I had the chance to ask Dan + Shay what it was like to help the two reality show darlings fall in love.
When they were on the red carpet at the CMT Music Awards, they told me what really went on behind the scenes of the show.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” Dan Smyers said. “We just got a call from the show and found out that they loved our song. ‘From the Ground Up,’ and they asked if we would we want to come sing it for JoJo. We were like, ‘Absolutely.’”
As soon as the duo announced they were going to be on the romantic reality show, Smyers said people came out of the woodwork wanting to get in on it somehow.
“We filmed it at the Palace, right outside of where I grew up in Pennsylvania,” he said. “And so all my friends from high school were like, ‘Dude, you’re on The Bachelorette? Can I come watch?’ I mean all of the guys, all of the girls. It was just insane. That show’s absolutely got a cult following.”
And here’s what happened when Dan + Shay started singing their love song, and JoJo was living “so in the moment” with Luke.
“JoJo and Luke were slow dancing right in front of the stage — and really, really kissing — while we were up there onstage. It was a little distracting,” he laughed, “but a great opportunity for us, for sure. When JoJo saw us performing, she freaked out. It was so cool. They came up onstage and gave us hugs afterwards, and then we got to hang out with them for a little bit without the cameras.”
The Dan + Shay episode was the last one for the villain of the show, Chad. And I like to think maybe country music had something to do with that.
